Until well into the 1950s most people in Europe could not afford a car.
In the USA the situation took an entirely different turn with Henry Ford's Model T which made the automobile a means of transportation for the masses already in the 1920s.
By leaving out everything which was not absolutely necessary, like a techometer or
a fuel gauge, and assembly line production a standard model cost only $ 500. in 1914, which corresponded to about four monthly wages of an industrial worker.
For nineteen years the Model T was the car with the largest production numbers in the world.
More than 15 million units were built, and many years had to pass before Volkswagen broke this record with the Beetle.
The car shown here is a typical series model from 1917 with a 2.9 l engine with an output of 20 hp.
