From 1931 on the Zeppelin, Maybach's top model, was produced as a model DS 8 with an 8-liter, 12-cylinder-engine.
In 1934 it replaced the DS 7 altogehter.
At that time, among other improvements, the five-speed gear was exchanged for a gearbox with seven speeds, of course also equipped with the preselection system designed by Maybach.
As a consequence of the high price and the bad economy condition, however, the demand was rather modest.
Of the approximately 1800 Maybach cars that were built only about 200 were Zeppelin models, hardly more than 25 were DS 8 with an 8-liter engine.
