During the 1950s the German company Hoffmann manufactured Vespa scooters for sales in Germany under license.
Since the owner of the company was not satiesfied with the outoput of the original engine he decided to develop it further without the permission by Piaggio.
In 1954 he presented the Hoffmann Konigin (Queen) which was powered by an improved engine.
Piaggio, however, was not amused be Hoffmann's unauthorized changes and terminated the license agreement without prior notice.
The case went to court and ended with a mutual settlement.
Hoffmann was permitted to sell licensed Vespa models until the end of 1955 but lost all rights previously granted by piaggio afterwards.
From 1956 on Vespa license production of Germany was taken over by the Messerschmitt factories in Augsburg.
