Citroen DS Special

Year: 1970
Power: 78 PS
Capacity: 1972 ccm

When the Citroen DS was first presented to the public in 1955, it set new standards in several ways.

What was obvious at first sight was the extravagantly shaped aerodynamic body and the futuristic design of the interior, and here especially the single spoke steering wheel.

The design split the public into two camps.

Some were enthusiastic about it, for the others the car was nothing but ugly.

There was nothing in between.

However, all admired the innovative technical features that were hidden beneath the body sheet.

Amongst them were the hydro pneumatic suspension that, depending on the quality of the street, could even be height adjusted, the hydraulic disc brakes and the power steering.

All these features were made possible by the high pressure hydraulics that was used by Citroen in the DS for the first for a car intended for the mass market.

Its revolutionary suspension even saved the life of the legendary former French President Charles de Gaulle.

When he was assassinated in 1962 while riding in his Citroen DS, the car was riddled by bullets but, although it was driving on the rims in the pure sense of word, remained steerable and managed to escape with the unhurt President.
