To stay competitive Sauber decided in 1997 to employ Ferrari engines instead of the Ford engines which they used before.
The major Malaysian sponsor Petronas agreed to pay the leasing fees but only under the condition that the engines would bear the sponsor's name.
Thus the Petronas 3.0 V10 was born.
The Partnership between Sauber and the Malaysian petrochemical company lasted until 2005.
In 2000 Sauber finished 8th in the constructor's championship with the Formula 1
car shown here piloted by Mika Salo and Pedro Diniz.
