On 15 March 1921, with financial support from his father Emanuele, the army pilot Giorgio Paradi and his friend Carlo Guzzi, an aircraft technician, founded the Moto Guzzi Company with a factory in the small Italian city Mandello del Lario.
Due to the close relationship of the founders to aircraft and in remembrance to Giovanni Ravelli, who also contributed to the idea of founding the company but suffered a lethal aircraft crash shortly after the end of WW I, an eagle with spread wings was chosen as company logo.
Since the 1966 V7 model the engine with longitudinal cardan shaft is a hallmark of Moto Guzzi bikes.
This design makes for a low center of gravity, is advantageous for the cardan drive since it requires a pivot only at the rear wheel and, compared to a boxer engine, allows a greater inclination in curves and a more balanced weight distribution.
The V2 engine had the camshaft in the cylinder block and pushrods for valve control.
It was not before 1999 that an overhead camshaft was employed.
Since 2004, the company belongs to the Piaggio group.
